While not being a lobbying group or a political action committee, CIOF will campaign
aggressively to communicate the severity of the childhood obesity epidemic to the
insurance industry, governmental agencies, educational institutions and to major
employers. Our principal tools will be the mass media, awareness seminars and events,
and informative materials distributed at the grassroots level.
There must be positive and meaningful social and financial incentives offered by
employers for weight control and health maintenance on the part of their employees.
This will strike a powerful pre-emptive blow against overweight and obesity.
Alternatively, there has got to be better, more readily available third-party insurance
company coverage for intensive treatment in certain special cases. These include those
situations where individuals are suffering from severe overweight and obesity due to
factors beyond their control; where diet and exercise alone are simply inadequate.
